Sunset Smokey Eye

Last updated:

The classic black smokey eye is timeless, but the sunset version feels fresher and more wearable for 2026. Instead of black and grey, you work with warm tones — coral, orange, copper, burnt sienna, and deep burgundy — blended into a soft, diffused shape. The warm tones are especially flattering in golden-hour lighting and for anyone with green, hazel, or brown eyes (the warm shades make eye color pop). This look is perfect for date nights, dinners, and fall/winter.

Step-by-step

  1. 1

    Neutral base

    Step 1 of 8

Apply a creamy concealer or eyeshadow primer all over the lid and up to the brow bone. This gives the warm tones something to grab onto and keeps them from creasing.

  2. 2

    Peach transition

    Step 2 of 8

Using a fluffy blending brush, sweep a peach or light coral shade through the crease in windshield-wiper motions. Keep it soft — this is the bridge between skin and the darker colors.

Tip: Tap off excess before touching the lid — too much peach will muddy everything.

  3. 3

    Orange mid-tone

    Step 3 of 8

Using a slightly smaller brush, layer a warm orange or burnt sienna into the crease and just below it, deepening the color. Keep blending upward into the peach transition so there are no visible edges.

  4. 4

    Copper on the lid

    Step 4 of 8

Pat a copper or bronze shimmer shadow directly onto the center of the lid with your finger or a flat shader brush. Pressing the shadow in (not sweeping) gives the most intense sparkle.

  5. 5

    Deep burgundy outer corner

    Step 5 of 8

With a small pencil brush, apply deep burgundy or brown-red into the outer corner of the lid and slightly into the crease, creating a V-shape. Blend the outer edge so it fades into the orange.

Tip: The burgundy is the 'smoke' — keep it concentrated in the outer third and fully blended.

  6. 6

    Smoke the lower lash line

    Step 6 of 8

Take the burgundy and orange shadows to the outer two-thirds of the lower lash line. Smudge with a small blending brush for a diffused smokey effect — no harsh lines.

  7. 7

    Tightline and inner corner

    Step 7 of 8

Tightline the upper waterline with dark brown or black kohl for depth, then add a tiny dot of copper shimmer in the inner corner to open up the eye.

  8. 8

    Volume mascara and optional lashes

    Step 8 of 8Almost done!

Curl lashes and apply two coats of volume mascara. For a bigger look, add a pair of wispy false lashes in the outer corner only. Skip a full lash strip — it can overwhelm the warm shadow.

Pro tips

  • Work from light to dark, and blend between every step. Warm tones muddy easily if layered without blending.
  • Use a clean blending brush at the end to soften every edge — there should be no visible lines.
  • Pair with a nude, neutral pink, or terracotta lip. A bold red lip with warm smokey eyes is too much.

Skin type notes

Warm shadow tones work across all skin types. For oily lids, use an eyeshadow primer or you will see creasing within a few hours.
