A wet-look complexion is mostly skincare wearing a little makeup. The shine that makes it work comes from hydrated skin catching light, not from a highlighter doing an impression of it — which is why the same products give one person glass and another person grease. The difference is prep, coverage kept deliberately sheer, and shine placed only where bone would naturally catch light. Powder is the enemy of the entire look, so oil control has to be handled at the prep stage instead.

Step-by-step

Hydrate in thin layers

A hydrating toner or essence pressed in with the palms, then a light serum, then moisturiser. Three thin layers absorb where one thick one sits on top and turns to slip under foundation. Give each a moment before the next.
Tip: Press, don't rub. Pressing drives product in; rubbing moves it around and pills anything already there.

Prime only where you need it

A hydrating or luminous primer on the cheeks and anywhere dry, and a light mattifying one on the T-zone if you run oily. Priming the whole face with one product is why wet-look bases either slide off or go flat by noon.

Sheer coverage, and less of it

A skin tint, serum foundation, or your usual foundation cut with a drop of facial oil — applied with damp fingers or a damp sponge. Wet-look skin needs to show through the base; full coverage kills the effect no matter what you layer on top.

Place shine on the bone, not the face

Liquid or balm highlight on the top of the cheekbone, the bridge of the nose, the cupid's bow, and a touch on the brow bone. Shine everywhere reads as oil; shine on the high points reads as light hitting a face.
Tip: A dab of clear balm on the very top of the cheekbone gives a wetter, more realistic catch than any shimmer highlighter.

At most, a whisper of translucent powder on the sides of the nose and the centre of the chin — the two places shine reads as grease rather than glow. Leave the cheeks and forehead alone entirely.

Finish with a dewy setting spray

A hydrating setting spray misted from arm's length, left to dry undisturbed. It melts the layers together and brings back any glow the concealing steps flattened.

Pro tips

The glow is prep. If the base looks flat, the answer is a hydration layer underneath, not more highlighter on top.
Damp fingers beat any tool for this base — body heat thins the product and pushes it into the skin instead of sitting it on the surface.
Mixing a single drop of facial oil into a fuller-coverage foundation you already own is the cheapest way to get a wet finish without buying a new base.

Skin type notes

Oily skin should handle shine control entirely at steps 2 and 7 — a mattifying primer on the T-zone and a whisper of powder on the nose and chin only — rather than powdering the whole face, which cancels the look. Dry skin can skip the powder step completely. Textured or acne-prone skin should keep the shine strictly to the cheekbone and brow bone, since shine over texture emphasises it.
