What Is Makeup Shelf Life?

Makeup shelf life is how long a product remains safe and effective to use after opening, typically indicated by the PAO (Period After Opening) symbol on the packaging.

Every makeup product has a limited lifespan once opened. The PAO symbol — a small jar icon with a number like 6M, 12M, or 24M — tells you how many months the product is good for after first use. Using expired makeup can cause irritation, breakouts, infections (especially around the eyes), and diminished performance. General guidelines: mascara 3 months, liquid eyeliner 3–6 months, cream products 6–12 months, liquid foundation 6–12 months, lipstick 12–18 months, powder products 18–24 months, pencil products 12–24 months. These are estimates — if a product smells off, has changed texture or color, or separates, discard it regardless of the date.

Tips

  • Write the open date on products with a permanent marker so you can track shelf life.
  • Mascara expires fastest (3 months) — never share mascaras, and replace religiously.
  • Store products in cool, dry places away from direct sunlight to maximize shelf life.
  • If it smells different, looks different, or feels different — toss it, regardless of the date.
