What Is Lip Tenting?
Lip tenting is a technique where you apply a concentrated dot of color or gloss in the center of the lower lip and press your lips together, creating a natural gradient with the most color in the middle.
Lip tenting mimics how color naturally concentrates in the center of the lips and fades outward. Instead of applying lipstick or gloss evenly across the entire lip, you place a dot or small amount on the center of the lower lip, press your lips together once, and leave it. The result is a soft, lived-in gradient that makes lips look naturally flushed. It's related to the Korean gradient lip technique but even more minimal — the goal is the least amount of product for the most natural-looking color.
Tips
- Works best with a tinted lip balm, lip stain, or sheer lipstick — opaque formulas are harder to gradient.
- Don't blend or fuss with it. Press lips together once and walk away.
- If you want more color, add another dot in the center and press again rather than spreading the existing color outward.
