How to Do New Year's Eve Makeup That Lasts Till Midnight
By Viktoria @vioda.makeup ·
NYE makeup fails in the same three places: the base slides, the glitter falls, and the lip is gone by the first drink. Here's how I do a look that's still there at midnight, plus a fifteen-minute version and the 11pm fix.
Glam that survives champagne, a warm room and every photo — a New Year's Eve look you can do in twenty minutes, with the trick for glitter that doesn't fall and a base that's still there at 12.
The brief: bright room, long night, lots of photos
New Year's Eve is the hardest wear test of the year. You're in a warm room for six hours, there's a drink in your hand, and every fifth minute someone's phone is out. That means the look has to do three things at once: photograph well under flash, survive heat and champagne, and still read as glam at midnight without a touch-up you won't have time for. Everything below is built around those constraints, not just around looking good in the mirror at eight.
Pick one focal point — a glittered eye or a bold lip, rarely both at full volume. NYE is the one night you can go all the way on either, but doing both loud is where a look tips from festive into costume.
A base that's still there at midnight
Start with grip, not coverage. On clean, moisturised skin, a gripping primer where you sweat first — around the nose, the chin, the centre of the forehead — gives the rest of the face something to hold onto. Foundation goes on thin; a heavy base is the one that slides in a warm room and cakes in photos. Build coverage only where you need it and leave the rest.
Then lock it. Set the T-zone with a light powder, and finish the whole face with a setting spray — this is the single step that decides whether you're reapplying at ten. My full method is in how to make your makeup last all day; NYE is just that routine taken seriously.
The eye: glitter or smoke
For sparkle, a smokey base with glitter on top is the classic NYE eye and the one that photographs best. Do the smokey eye first as your foundation — a wash of bronze or charcoal, blended soft — then press the glitter into the centre of the lid where the light will catch it. Pressing, not sweeping: a flat brush or a clean fingertip packs it on where a dragging motion just scatters it.
If glitter isn't your thing, a deep, glossy smokey eye reads just as festive under flash. Either way, do the eyes before the base if you're using loose sparkle, so fallout wipes away before your foundation is down.
The trick for glitter that doesn't fall
Fallout is the thing that ruins a glitter eye by nine o'clock. The fix is a proper glitter glue or a dab of a sticky cream base on the lid before the sparkle — a dry shadow brush drops half of it onto your cheeks, a tacky base holds it in place all night. Press the glitter on with the flat of a fingertip, tap off the excess, and do it before your under-eye concealer so any stray flecks come off with a clean swipe. My full method is in how to do glitter eye makeup — the same rules, dialled up for the one night you want maximum shine.
The lip: bold or glossy, but make it last
A classic red lip is the most photogenic NYE lip there is, and the one most likely to end up on a champagne glass. Line the whole lip, fill it in with a long-wear liquid or a blotted-and-layered bullet, then blot and reapply once — the layer under the blot is what survives the first drink. If a bold lip feels like too much next to a glittered eye, a high-shine clear or berry gloss keeps the focus up top and forgives reapplication all night.
The fifteen-minute version
Short on time: gripping primer on the T-zone, thin foundation, concealer only where you need it, one sweep of a shimmery bronze shadow blended up, mascara, a setting spray, and a long-wear lip. That's it — the shimmer does the festive work, the setting spray does the lasting, and you're out the door. You can always press a little glitter onto the lid at the party if you want more.
The 11pm fix
By eleven the shine is off the base and the lip has faded to a stain. You don't rebuild — you refresh. Blot the T-zone with a tissue, one quick pass of powder, a spritz of setting spray to knock back any powdery look, and reline the lip. Thirty seconds in a bathroom and you're photo-ready for midnight. Keep a mini setting spray and the lip in your bag; that's the whole touch-up kit NYE needs.
