How to Do Gradient Lips (Korean Lip Technique)

By Viktoria @vioda.makeup ·

Gradient lips give a soft, popsicle-stained effect that looks effortless. Learn the K-beauty technique step by step.

The gradient lip is K-beauty's signature technique. Here's how to get the soft, bitten look with any lip product you already own.

What Is the Gradient Lip?

The gradient lip (also called ombre lip or Korean bitten lip) concentrates color at the center of the lips and fades outward, creating a soft, just-bitten effect. It's one of K-beauty's most iconic techniques and has become a global staple because it makes lips look fuller, softer, and more youthful.

Unlike a fully defined Western lip where you line and fill to the edges, the gradient lip intentionally blurs the lip line. This creates a less structured, more romantic look that works beautifully for everyday wear, date nights, and photos.

Step 1: Prep and Conceal the Lip Line

Start with clean, moisturized lips. If your natural lip line is very defined or dark, dab concealer or foundation along the outer edge of your lips and blend inward slightly. This softens the border and gives the gradient something to fade into.

Blot the concealer with your finger—you want a natural transition, not a harsh white line around your mouth. This step is optional for lighter lip colors but makes a big difference with deeper shades.

Step 2: Apply Color to the Center

Using a lip tint, matte lipstick, or lip stain, apply color to the inner center of both lips. Focus the most intense color on the area where your upper and lower lips meet when closed.

For liquid formulas: dab a small amount onto the inner lip and press your lips together gently. For bullet lipsticks: apply directly to the inner third, then blend outward with your finger.

The key is starting small. You can always build more intensity, but it's hard to remove excess once applied.

Step 3: Blend Outward

Use your ring finger (the gentlest pressure) to tap the color outward toward the edges of your lips. The motion is a soft tapping—never dragging—to create a natural fade.

Alternatively, press your lips together and gently rub them side to side to naturally diffuse the color. This gives a very organic, lived-in gradient that looks like you just ate a popsicle.

If the gradient isn't visible enough, add another layer of product to the center and blend again. Building in layers gives you the most control.

Step 4: Optional Gloss Finish

For extra dimension, dab a clear or matching gloss on the center of the lower lip only. This catches light at the fullest point and makes lips look plumper. Skip this step if you prefer a matte gradient.

You can also use a lip oil on the center for a K-beauty "glass lip" effect combined with gradient color. This gives maximum dimension and a fresh, hydrated look.

Best Products for Gradient Lips

Korean lip tints (like Peripera Ink Airy Velvet and rom&nd Juicy Lasting Tint) are designed for this technique—they're buildable, stain the lips, and blend easily. But you can achieve a gradient with any matte or satin lip product you own.

For drugstore options, Maybelline SuperStay Ink Crayon and NYX Lip Lingerie work well. For a sheer gradient, even a tinted lip balm dabbed on the center creates a beautiful soft effect.
